Pumpkin Carving Bash!
Jason Whitt, King of the Autumn Court has decided it would be good for both Biblos to be decorated for the season and for Changelings to connect a bit to their ‘human’ lives. How better to celebrate the season than to carve pumpkins! Loving art as he does, he decided to make it into a bit of a contest. All are invited.

Squash and gourds of multiple colors are stacked on tables and next to overturned barrels. All manner of knives and carving tools are laid out for all to use and buckets are set up marked ‘seeds’ with the intention of later planting or roasting as snacks.

Pick your Pumpkin-
Characters move through the assembled piles of pumpkins in attempt to pick the most attractive squash to mutilate. Roll Manipulation+Empathy to pick one you think others will find nice. Choose Yellow, Orange, Green, Variegated or White. Gain 1 point for each success.

Design your Jack’o’lantern-
A perfectly scary jack’o’lantern needs proper planning.
Roll Presence+Expression to come up with a good design. Gain 1 point for each success

Carve Away
- A steady hand nets the best results. Try to avoid slicing your fingers as you cut into the pumpkin. The slimy texture of the innards may offend some characters as they hollow it out. Roll Dexterity+Crafts. Gain 1 point for each success
  • Dramatic Failure- Take 1 point of lethal as the knife slices deep into your palm. Ouch!

Light it up with effects!
With a bit of ingenuity, a character can get their pumpkin to pull off some very impressive effects with minimal work. Just be careful of your surroundings! Roll Science+Intelligence and pick one of the following effects, for science!

Basic Candle- no roll=0 bonus
Glow sticks- no roll=0 bonus
Metal Salts (Colorants) added to fire Strontium(red)/borax(green)/White(epsom salt)/Yellow(table salt)/orange(calcium chloride)/purple(potassium chloride): +1 for success
  • Dramatic Failure or failure (+0)
Fog effect-dry ice: gain +2 for success, 0 for failure
  • Dramatic Failure- Frostbite! For the rest of the night, halve your healing rate
Sparks-sparklers: gain +3 for success
  • Dramatic Failure-Sparks hit eyes! -3 to all rolls based on vision for the night
Hand sanitizer on outside of pumpkin(rainbow flames)
  • Dramatic Failure-Burns! Take one point of lethal damage!
Flamethrower Pumpkin- quart of kerosene and toilet paper
  • Dramatic Failure-Started a fire… Inferno Tilt occurs!

The highest and second highest scores will get two or one commendation points, respectively.

Chantelle was artistic, just not in the ways required for pumpkin carving. That being said, she perused the available selection, settling on a green-and-white variegated pumpkin that she thought was pretty. Caressing the surface of the vegetable with her long, spidery fingers, the egret pondered on her design, but eventually settled on a simple face with triangle eyes and a mouth that curved up almost to the stem. It wasn't the best effort, but she liked it all the same.

The carving went well enough, or at least she didn't injure herself, her hands were not built for this sort of activity, the slippery innards squishing through her slender fingers. Ick, Chantelle snorted, but she persevered. When the time finally came to light up her creation, she acknowledged her shortcomings, and settled on some nice glowsticks, and left it at that. Not a magnificent effort, but it was something, and that was a start.

It had been a very long time ago by her reckoning, since last she did any pumpkin carvin'. Apparently she had always been doing it wrong before. There was chemical science involved?! Samantha did not know anything about such things. Nor did she know much at all about pumpkins themselves. Or design. Or really anything, except carving them up. That part was easy.

In the end, her pumpkin was of the most basic kind of carved variety... but the carving itself was expertly done, at least.

Dily's nostrils widened slightly in scepticism. This was not her... forte. Far from it. She had carved pumpkins, but only to scoop out its contents. Not to... decorate.

Picking out an orange pumpkin, because it was the traditional color of pumpkins, she at least was no stranger to wielding a knife, and with a quiet focus she began the tedious process of gooping out the pumpkin, and then the process of carving the surface.

However, she was uneasy with the offer of special effects, and after briefly trying for some colors on a test piece, Dily decided against it and stuck with the traditional basic candle.

Artistic really wasn't Gray's thing, but it seemed like the thing to do, and hey, the boss man of his Court was hosting. So, what the hell did he have to lose?

"What to pick...white seems fine, right? White is close to grey" It seemed that Gray had stumbled into a good one!

Pick your Pumpkin: Manipulation+Empathy: 6d10o10h8 3= 3 points

Now, the artistic part. "Ok, so, not my strength...maybe I can pretend I mean it the way it comes out". Gray pauses. "Ok, not even I can sell that. Basic it is!"
Design your Jack’o’lantern: Presence+Expression (chance die): 1d10 7

Gray traced his fingers over the pumpkin, feeling his claws extend, and a wicked grin forming in his face. "Oh, who needs a knife?"
Carve the Pumpkin: Dexterity+Crafts: 3d10o10h8 2 = 2 points
With a deft moment the claws in his fingertips sink into the flesh, carving gouges into the pattern. Basic as it is, Gray keeps expert control, letting him carve partially into the flesh to offer perspective.

"There, that should do it. Give it a basic candle, and let's call it a day."

And the point of this is...what exactly?

It seemed so silly to the girl; pick a fat piece of fruit, cut something into it, then make it glow. Maybe if she was younger, and perhaps in another life...an old life, she would have understood.

Pumpkins are orange, so she picked an orange one. Simple. She looked at the others, who were dressing up a pumpkin. That seemed really silly. Eliza put a party hat on hers. That'll do.

Now carving time. She gave the pumpkin silly little eyes and a mouth, with the jagged teeth. She put it down, and said "there, done."

A pause as one of the people nearby pointed to the candles. She had to light up the thing? If that's to be expected...

She picked up a candle, then decided instead to make a bigger flame. That would be more dramatic, right? Maybe she could leave then?

Pumpkin kerosened up, and paper put in place, she lit it. The flames jumped into the air, and Eliza took a step back, causing the pumpkin to roll...into where the rest of the kerosene was.

Huh...that can't be... WOOOOSH

The place went up in flames. Winter had set fire to the place.

Jack twirled the knife in his hand, looking over the assortment of pumpkins carefully. Ultimately, he went with a traditionally orange one. It was larger, with a clean surface and solid shell. The design came easily to mind as he hollowed out the gourd. The blade sliced through the pumpkin with deft precision as the image in bis mind became reality. Some dry ice was soon added as an extra touch, connecting the autumn season with his own.

It was not his best work. But overall, he was very pleased with it. He was considering cobbling together a body and some limbs, to give the Pumpkin Prince some mobility. Then...

"Fire!" Panicked, Jack only considered saving his pumpkin for half a breath, before running away as fast as his wooden little legs could carry him.

Picking a pumpkin wasn't that hard, even if you palms were the size of soup bowls. Or it might have been hard, but Marcus had been cursed with rather acute senses and so he went through the pumpkins, sniffing each he picked up before settling to a large, orange pumpkin-pumpkin. It smelled fresh and it was orange.

Looking at others carving away gave Marcus an idea. Which was a good thing, unfortunately he wasn't particularly bright, so that didn't help. How about I fuck this thing, so it looks like someone fucked his face up. The canine mouth curled into a twisted smile.

Lifting the pumpkin up, the shaggy changeling punched three fingers of his left paw in the fruit, leaving three holes into the side.

Good enough. Marcus mused to himself as he laid his pumpkin down, his tongue lolling out of his mouth.

Craig made it to the pumpkin carving and despite having no real experience with it he managed to pick a pretty great looking canvas for his pumpkin art. However, this seemed to be where his luck for the day ran out. Marcus couldn't for the life of him figure out what the heck he wanted to carve he scrapped idea a fter idea eventually just deciding to go for something simple. But his hands failed him, they were big and brutish, designed for crushing and smashing, not carving. He grew frustrated at one point and pressed too hard with the knife sending through the pumpkin and into his hand fairly deep. He cursed as crimson liquid spilled out, Craig found something to wrap it with and just finished his pumpkin sullenly sitting it next to the other entries. Right about then he heard some screams and he turned to see what the commotion was all about.
