"It will heal, eventually." He showed her the wound, lifting the handkerchief.

Chantelle hissed through her beak, the wound seemed more grievous compared to his small frame. Forgetting that he was much older than her, she drew him close, making soothing sounds. “Mais, you le’ Chantelle ta’ care of you, mon petite.” Concentrating, she sang a soft lullaby, but the words were not English, or even French, but a language Jack would recognise all the same, for it was the undefinable language of fae magic.

Stroking her fingertips over the wound, a soothing ointment coalesced where her touch passed, and it smelled faintly of peppermint and rosemary. Even as he watched, the deepest parts of the wound began to knit together.

When her song ended, she smiled tenderly and caressed his cheek, “dat feel betta?”

She would have given him a kiss on the forehead, but her beak precluded such things, so she rubbed the end of her beak near his temple in an approximation of the gesture. “You very kin’ to say so, T’Jack, now le’ see abou’ get’in’ you ‘ome,” By home, she meant her apartment, but that was close enough. “We’re you able to ma’ yourself comfor’ble las’ nigh’?”

"Yes." he nodded. "I was very comfortable. More than I have been in a long time."

“Very good,” as they began to wend their way home, Chantelle almost offered the elf her hand, before remembering that he wasn’t a child. “Mais,” she suddenly recalled, “I go’ you someting today.”

"You did?" he looked at her with curiosity. "But, I don't have anything for you, yet."

Clucking her tongue, “dat’s no’ de poin’, mon petite, I didn’ ge’ you someting cause I was expec’in’ anyting in return.” Opening her purse, she took out a small box and presented it to Jack, it was a mobile phone: a basic model, but more than enough for texting and running an app or two. “I pu’ my numba in dere, so you ca’ message me if you nee’.”
