Pledges: A Summary

SEALING

Any statement of intent or promise can be sealed by a Changeling present to hear or read the pledge at the time is was said or written. A seal is broken if the sealed party attempts to fulfil the promise and fails, or becomes incapable of fulfilling the promise; the sealing Changeling can choose the consequences at the time of sealing or at the time of breaking.


BASIC

Pledging:
- The sealing Changeling pays 1 Glamour,
- If the sealed party is also a Changeling, they gain a Beat (once per chapter),
- If the sealed party can use Glamour, they may undo the pledge for 1 Glamour.

Oathbreaking (one of):
- Lose a Willpower point,
- Take 1 point of Bashing Damage,
- Subtract 1 die from all rolls for a scene,
- Subtract 2 dice from a specific Skill for a scene,
- Subtract 3 dice from a single roll,
- Minor supernatural effect (not mechanical).


STRENGTHENED

Pledging:
- As above, but the sealing Changeling also pays 1 Willpower.

Oathbreaking (one of):
- Cannot regain Willpower that day,
- Take 1 point of Lethal Damage,
- Take 3 points of Bashing Damage,
- Cannot spend Willpower for one scene,
- Subtract 2 dice from all rolls for a scene,
- Subtract 3 dice from a specific Skill for a scene,
- Subtract 5 dice from a single roll,
- Use one of the sealing Changelings Contracts on the sealed party.


HUNTSMAN

Pledging:
- The sealing Changeling pays 1 Glamour and rolls Presence + Wyrd, contested by the Huntsman's Resolve + Wyrd.

Success: the Pledge is sealed and the Changeling gains the Paranoid Condition.
Exceptional Success: the Pledge is sealed, without the Paranoid Condition.
Failure: the Pledge is not sealed.
Dramatic Failure: the Pledge is not sealed and the Changeling gains the Paranoid Condition.

Oathbreaking:
- as per a Strengthened Sealing.


OATHS

A formal and permanent promise between two or more Changelings, or between Changelings and Huntsmen/Fae. Mortals cannot be oath-bound (see Bargains, below).


PERSONAL: a deeply emotional pledge between two Changelings.

Pledging:
- Both parties pay 1 Glamour.

Boons:
- Gain a Beat whenever the Changeling experiences setback/inconvenience while upholding this oath (once per chapter),
- Regain all Willpower by making a significant expression of the emotion that inspired the pledge (once per chapter).

Additionally, one of:
- Suffer an injury on behalf of the other party (once per chapter),
- Suffer a Condition or Tilt on behalf of the other party (once per chapter),
- Swap Glamour or Willpower pools (once per chapter),
- The parties can always locate each other, even in the Hedge.

Oathbreaking:
- Gain the Persistent Oathbreaker Condition,
- Immediately lose boons,
- Experience a Breaking Point,
- Other penalties appropriate to the type of oath broken.


SOCIETAL: the oath-bound form or join a group such as a Court or Motley.

Pledging:
- All parties pay 1 Glamour.

Boon (one of):
- Treat a Contract roll as a teamwork action (once per chapter),
- Distribute all parties' remaining Glamour evenly between them,
- Use the highest Social Skill of the group and apply all merit and kith blessings (once per chapter),
- Other created benefit.

Oathbreaking:
- Gain the Persistent Oathbreaker Condition,
- Immediately lose group boon,
- Experience a Breaking Point,
- Other penalties appropriate to the type of oath broken.


HOSTILE: a pledge of enmity between two parties.

Pledging:
- Both parties pay 1 Glamour.

Boons:
- Gain a Beat when the Changeling is wounded or inconvenieced by the other party (once per chapter),
- Gain 1 Willpower when the Changeling wounds or inconveniences the other party (once per scene).

Oathbreaking:
- Gain the Persistent Oathbreaker Condition,
- Immediately lose boons,
- Experience a Breaking Point.


BARGAINS

An ongoing pledge made between a Changeling and a mortal human for supernatural protection.

Pledging:
- The Changeling reveals their Mien to the human and proposes the terms of the bargain,
- The Changeling gains the Obliged Condition.

Boons:
- The Changeling is less noticeable to Huntsmen and Fae,
- Depending on the wording of the bargain the Changeling gains some form of payment from the human, which may range from money and goods, to a future favour.

Oathbreaking:
- Immediately lose boons.
