[Day 3 - LN] Hail to the King (Limited)

She halted but her eyes were glued to the offering.
"What's the catch?"

"Are their lives and wealth forfeit as soon as they choose to stop partaking?" he asked. "How often do they partake?"

“Time as you experience it, it will claim it’s due ape-thing,” the voices spoke. The distended freakish apple faces continued, “Betray the mechanism and you will become fuel and maintenance for the mechanism.”

The voices do not respond to the question of the Catch, perhaps not understanding or not feeling a need to respond.

“The maintenance is continuous, next cycle will be in five revolutions of this terrestrial object around the gaseous orb. This soil must be maintained to fuel the eternal mechanism.”


The child finally spoke, “Drink and you will see.”

He looked into the girl's eyes. "Are you happy with your role in this? Or, do you have regrets?"

[Dapper Dog]

“We do not know joy or sadness we are part of the eternal mechanism we serve the King and we are the King. Ape-things demand purpose and meaning, we need neither,” she said calmly.

“Regrets are a construct of ape-things, to give meaning to their short brutish lives. Actions along a long enough time scale have no meaning, only short term impacts that smooth out into a flat line once one pulls back the cloak of reality,” she responded.

"No regrets? Will you allow me to see that for myself?" he asked, continuing to focus his eyes on hers.

[Dapper Dog]

The girl offered her cupped hands holding the sweet smelling crimson sap.

It was impossible to resist, really. She never should've come. She was set up. This was all a ploy to get her, grab her back, throw her into some impossible situation that was so horrifying familiar and like nothing she had never experienced before.

She could not be held back.

Mina drank.

"I was asking if I could look for your regrets, to be sure there were none." he explained.

The sap is sticky in her mouth and flavorful, warm like bourbon going down and yet smooth. She feels her sight expand briefly and can see the connections, the trees vibrate and pulse in rhythm with the billions of cables that connect them to the land and from the sky are more cables of black and crimson that extend into infinity each masked person is connected to these cables and hoses and now she is too… she is part of the eternal mechanism.

She can see all events that brought her here and the millions of realities where she chose differently even her multiple deaths. The child before her is silver skinned with eyes that contain galaxies and she is now looking down on a spiral display of stars moving in coordination with the eternal mechanism.

She sees four crowns, one of green flows, one of red brown leaves, one of flames, and a final of ice sitting in a pool of blood… no they are drinking up the blood and made stronger.

The sky is no longer the sky but a grand artifice, and then she was back in the orchard licking at the fingers of the child.

Gain the Condition below:

Eternal Mechanism: The character will not age for five years until the next coming of the Apple King, they now suffer from the King’s hunger though, they must consume human flesh or blood equal to five pounds per month or suffer a -2 to all skills. Character also gains Resources 3 or increases Resources by 2 up to 5, maximum.

Resolution: Forsake the Apple King and suffer the hunger for a year and a day.

"We have no regrets, so do as you like but if harm is brought to the tree or to the Apple King, there will be blood," she responded.
