"It was very beautiful, Chantelle." Jack smiled. "I'm sure the family living in the cabinets enjoyed it."

"Family in the cabinets?" Marcus looked and sounded confused, eyeing Chantelle's cabinets while his nose was wiggling in the air, trying to figure out if there were indeed more people around.

“Mais, ac’ually,” Chantelle set down her mug. “T’Jack, we expec’in’ anoder gues’ tonigh’. A young woman by de name of Tiffani. I daresay she stumble’ fro’ de ‘Edge ten minutes before I mee’ ‘er. She don’ ‘ave anywhere to go, so she’ll be stayin’ ‘ere fo’ de nigh’ at leas’.” It was going to be crowded, but that seemed a small price to pay. “She shoul’ be ‘ere before it time to leave fo’ de dream study.”

"Oh." the beast wrinkled his nose, his feathered tail perking for a moment. "A new comer." It took some time for Marcus to process the information, his snout turned downwards as he tried to think. "New one. Uh. Someone should take her to the kings tomorrow, don't you think?" he looked up at Chantelle, seeing that she was the one running this operation. "So that she'll know who's who and they'll know we have one more person around." The beasts ears were perked up as if he was happy to have figured this out.

"That's a good idea." Jack nodded. "I spoke with the Autumn King this morning. The bookstore should reopen tomorrow."

“Dat’s excellen’ news,” Chantelle replied to Jack, nodding to the pair approvingly. “I tink dat woul’ be bes’. She from Englan’, she go’ no money, no’ ID. De kings will be able to ‘elp ‘er decide if she stay, or try an’ go ‘ome.”

"It's a long haul." Marcus shook his head. "Probably better she stays here a bit before she goes wandering out all alone." A scent of sandalwood and leather puffed out, lingering around the beast. He was proud of his role as a protector of the Freehold. "Was she from our time? Or someone old."

Tilting her head to one side, tea-scented confusion seeped into the room, “mais, I don’ tink you eva did tell me exac’ly when you from, Marcus. Bu’ we migh’ as well ge’ it all ou’ in de table.” The pair would sense her nervousness, she knew how fortunate she was, and she couldn’t be entirely sure how the others would react.

“I escape’ de ‘Edge on, mais, on de day I was taken, in a manna of speakin’. As fa’ as de mortals know, I was neva gone. I daresay dat ma’ me younga dan de bot of you.”

"It's more complicated, for me." Jack said. "I was gone from this world for nearly a century. I had little sense of time, but it felt like I was there forever. Yet, in spite of the changes the Gentry imposed on me, I haven't really aged."
