Chantelle had needed to do some shopping, and now that she was done, it was time for a little treat in the form of a fancy iced mocha with whipped cream and ice cream and chocolate powder, and a slice of baked cheesecake. The egret settled herself down. She was wearing a maxi dress with long sleeves, the fabric patterned with roses, and a grey, ankle-length cardigan. The cafe was crowded, despite being the middle of the week, and Chantelle was fortunate to snag one of the small tables as some others left.

Chantelle feels a sudden small puff of chilly air from the girl at the next table over - but that chill doesn't disspate once the puff disappears. A bright red leaf lands on Chantelle's table and promptly disappears. She looks a bit ... odd. Wearing a pair of jeans, well, that's not so unusual, but she's wearing one of those loose shirts that falls over a single shoulder and belted at the waist with a wide, rhinestone-studded belt as if she were straight out of the 1980s. All that was missing were leg warmers.
Tiffani kept staring at the various patrons seated around her. She often closed her stormy grey eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose as if she had one crazy headache, then she would open them and take another look around. She still wasn't used to seeing the meins of other changelings, their myriad shapes and forms, a plethora of biologically impossible mixes of this and that. It was a testamony to the inhuman cruelty of the Fae, their seeming lack of caring about anything but their own whimsical desires.
She tried several times to pick up her drink and failed twice before her unseeing hand managed to wrap around the cup. Tiffani slowly brought the straw to her lips as her eyes fell on the ... what in god's name was that? Whatever it was, she - according to her apparel - was sitting at the next table. The bird hadn't been there before. She must have just sat down.
Bird ... bird ... what kind of bird? It was right on the tip of her tongue, but an ornithologist she was not. Yes, she loved science. It was her life, after all, but she wasn't particularly crazy about biology. Not after she saw an x-ray of someone eating a hotdog. It disgusted her so completely she didn't eat for three days.
Focus, dammit, she admonished herself. Why was it so important to know what kind of bird this woman was, anyway? Tiffani realized she needed the distraction, needed to sink her mental teeth into some kind of puzzle, some kind of mystery, to keep her upside down reality from clicking into place. A reality she was certain would drive her mad - like the endless leaves and the temperature fluxations that she couldn't even begin to control.
Her eyes bored into the egret next to her as her brain worked feverishly to figure out what kind of bird this woman was? And how insane it was to be sitting in a public place trying to figure out what kind of bird was sitting at the table next to you. What am I doing?
Tiffani snatched her drink off the table, got up, and approached the egret's table, standing opposite of the other woman.
"Uh ... excuse me, I don't mean to be a bother. But uh ... uhm ... may I sit down?" Tiffani gestures toward the empty chair at the table.

Chantelle looked up. Her beak couldn't smile, but the muscles of her face moved in the way they were supposed to, and her expressions were still understandable. Her chocolate brown eyes were kind, "oh, certai'ly," she extended her strange, long-fingered hand towards the chair, "be my gues'," she drawled in her musical voice.

Tiffani pulls the chair out from the table and slides into it - sitting on the seat's edge as if she is already planning to make a very hasty exit. She swipes her curly flame colored hair back from her face revealing for a moment the evish ears of her main. Of course, her hair falls over them again as she sits.
"I .. suppose I should at least introduce myself before .. well, before I ask something potentially rude. My name is TIffani. At least ... yeah." Even through her hesitant speech, her somewhat thick yet still easily-understandable English accent is impossible to miss. It's the kind of accent one often hears coming from British actors on television, the kind that lends an air of sophistication even if what is being said is anything but.
As she gives her name, Tiffani extends a hand across the table, the silver charm bracelet she wears making a clattering noise as a few of the charms drag across the surface.
"I .. suppose I should at least introduce myself before .. well, before I ask something potentially rude. My name is TIffani. At least ... yeah." Even through her hesitant speech, her somewhat thick yet still easily-understandable English accent is impossible to miss. She tensed in her chair even before the other woman answered, ready to leave at a moment's notice.
"I ... uh, know this is kind of a ... well, rude question, and I mean no offense, but ... uh ... what kind of bird are you, anyway?" Tiffani's expression briefly had a self-deprecating look to it - asking someone what kind of bird they were. Now there was the height of social graces.
She tensed in her chair even before the other woman answered, ready to leave at a moment's notice.

Chantelle didn't seem bothered at all, "I daresay I'm some sor' of lil egre', dey loca' to de area." Her accent was Cajun but, unlike her grooming, not impeccably so, more like the memory of how she used to speak.

Tiffani leaned in a little as if she didn't quite understand what Chantelle was saying, simply staring at her for a long moment as her brain tried to sort through the Cajun accent, the American accent, and the, well, the bird accent. Beaks are not the best tools in the world for speaking, she thought to herself, grateful that Chantelle couldn't hear her thoughts. Except what if she could?
Again, no offense, Tiffani ammended in her mind. Better safe than sorry.
"Oh ... egret!" She suddenly burst out her words as sudden understanding came to her. But the answer was bittersweet. Sure, she knew the answer, but she had no mystery with which to distract herself. "So you're from this area then?"
Tiffani's speech became stronger, less hesitant now that the hard part was over. "This might seem an even sillier question than the first but - where is this area? I fathomed it is in Louisiana somewhere, but that's all I know for right now."

Tiffani leaned back in her chair while nervously tugging on the charms dangling from her bracelet. "I've only been back a few days so ... " She looks around again, almost as if she's a bit panicked, " ... so I'm a little ... confused. I know it might be hard to get straight to England but ... well, I'm not even on the right continent. I guess I'm here for a reason, but, uh, well, I have no idea what to do now."
