Little bit by little bit, her worry became less and less pronounced. This Simon was a murderer; yet it seemed he was not without a decent side. If all this was just a ploy to get the woman to drop her guard, Samantha didn't see how it had to go this far. So, that was that then. With no need to linger in the cellar, she tried to leave, to go back and try and find her nephew again.

Her nephew had retired for the evening it seemed. Upon trying the door to his room, the door was locked firmly shut.

So be it. The mystery would have to wait until another night to be solved. She had her clues, in any case. And she had accomplished what she had set out to do as well; even if things had taken more than one unexpected turn. Still, there was one final thing she wanted to do. One final person she wanted to see.
Assuming that it had been long enough for most of the family to retire, she found her way over back over to Marie's room, and; carefully; tried to see if she could get the door open to go on inside.

Marie's room was unlocked. The girl asleep in her bed. The light from the hall caused her to stir a bit. She appeared to be sleeping fitfully all things considered.

She quietly closed the door again; not entirely, just enough so that the light didn't bother the girl's sleep.
For a minute or so she watched, wondering how the girl was coping; wondering how she was going to make sure the family didn't corrupt her too. She considered going into her dreams... Samantha knew such things were possible, though she'd never done it and didn't understand the process herself. That was probably too much to attempt now anyhow. So instead she opted to leave behind a simple message.
Presumably she might be able to find a pen and some paper in the girl's room. Assuming that was the case, she'd write her a short message:

And left it behind for her to find; before she'd retrace her steps, to leave the mansion the way she entered; if possible. You are the best of them. Don't let them unmake you. You are not alone.

Pen and paper were easy to find, the girl kept a journal on her desk. Retracing steps was pretty easy, ince again the hounds sniffed at the air but didn't get too close.

Tomorrow, and the nights after, she would return her gaze and perhaps even her form, to the mansion and those within.
But tonight, she was done with the place. Samantha disappeared into the night, to return home... to the tiny little place she was building into a home. A place of poverty and deprivation compared to the mansion where she'd grown up; but somewhere that lacked the evil that was found in all but one of the rooms she had visited here tonight.
