This is an alien thing, it is beyond his comprehension as the Contract is based on the bond and understanding of man and those creatures that have similar motivations and urges but his is something else outside that vast construct. This entity has intelligence and drives, but it has perhaps no understanding or regret or sadness or even self reflection.

Emotion is derived from chemical changes in the mind, it is what creates the erratic and often illogical decisions of people… this Apple King is more like what one would expect of a machine it has a purpose and it fulfills that purpose without question, and yet it is so much more.

Mina stumbled back, but felt a certain peace fall over her as things made sense, finally; after the alien land of arcadia where there were no rules... everything made sense. Mina stumbled into Walker.
"I saw... We're all connected. Everything, the trees, the people, the sky. Every choice I've made in my whole life has led me to here. This is what's meant to happen."

Craig wrapped a protective arm around Mina as she fell into him, he listened to her story and grew silent for a moment. He gave Mina a squeeze, light pressure and then he let her go and stepped forward kneeling before the child thing. "I will accept the bounty of the king."

She dipped her hand on the crimson sap and offered it to Craig… upon tasting the liquid he could hear it, the rhythm and heartbeat of the universe, all of them. He could see the eternal mechanism, the young girl was a steel maiden, her eyes LED lights and wings made of a digital display of data. Overhead he could see the divine mechanism connected to everything through hoses and wires and those connections attached them to his skin and now he could see the connections.

The connections that bound the tree to the land, the mechanism that pulsed under the soil. It was larger than Minuit and growing, growth was along a timeline that extended long after man would be nothing. This was the fulcrum of worlds and the Apple King sat at the center maintaining the land, oiling the eternal mechanism, the maintenance must be maintained.

Now that task was his, maintain the eternal mechanism, receive the bounty, and be a part of the grand work.

Then he came to his senses and found he had hungrily consumed the crimson sap.

"Thank you for this audience, Apple King. I would still like a branch, but I am pleased I could meet you, regardless. Perhaps we'll speak again in five cycles."

The voices from the apples with faces speaks, "What will you offer?"

"I bled for the apples. I could bleed again." he shrugged. "Or, I could make something for you, though it seems you want for little. Is there something you want, that the ape things can't provide?"

"You have something, something beyond what the ape-things can provide, give it to us this essence from other worlds," the voices command.
